C'mon America, This is just Pathetic

I don't typically quote the Washington Post in this Blog. but here's an interesting little turdlette of news from page A6:

To Date in the 2008 Primarypalloza, the vote count falls thusly:
REPUBLICAN VOTES: 20.5 Million
DEMOCRATIC VOTES: 36.6 Millon

On Tuesday Evening, 97.5 Million votes were cast in the American Idol finale.

We love to piss and moan about the state of affairs, and wring our hands lamenting that the country seems to be going to hades in a haversack. Yet we can't be bothered to get up, get out and cast our votes.

In a Democratic Republic, our vote is our voice. If we don't vote, we've no one but ourselves to blame for the state of things.

Heh. That instills a lot of confidence in our great nation. I certainly am not going to argue with the prevalent apathy amongst voters these days.

However, there are a few things the media conveniently forgets to mention when they quote these stats, especially as relates to voting rules and regulations.

For example, with American Idol you can vote as many times as you'd like each week. There are no age requirements for voting. You can vote by picking up the phone, or by simply sending a text message on your cell phone. You can even vote for more than one person if you want. (Actually, I hear this may not be a distinguishing characteristic from the political process in some parts of the U.S. :-P )

While I'd love to see more participation from the public in the political process, I'm guessing some of the restrictions in place for Presidential voting may be a Good Thing, even if it comes at the expense of fewer votes. Know what I mean?

I'm glad that a lot of idiots out there aren't voting.
